I Love teaching about different cultures🤓🤓

Hey Reader,

It's AMERICAN INDIAN & ALASKA NATIVE HERITAGE MONTH! I truly believe that we build a global classroom by learning about other cultures.

I was so excited to share the book My Powerful Hair by Carole Lindstrom and Steph Littlebird with my class. It's a POWERFUL story!

We ended October learning about Cultural Appropriation using this resource. It's great to use if you spotlight different cultures in your classroom.

Our social studies curriculum introduces Native Americans of the Southeast and Christopher Columbus. There never seems like enough time in the day to teach everything, so I try to integrate my social studies with my reading.

We have discussed the word 'stereotype' and what it means especially when reading literature. We looked at the alphabet book, Alligators All Around and Clifford's Halloween to point out stereotypes about Native Americans.

If you're looking for a great read, check out First Laugh-Welcome Baby I have a picture book unit available in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

This is a favorite because it shows a Navajo family in a present-day, city setting, giving us a glimpse of a cultural celebration.

Here is free, short reading passage about Maria Tallchief you can use in a center rotation or homework!

What books do you like to spotlight this month?

Remember, good things happen every day,

Hey Reader, Did you already have your winter break? I'm in a district that did not have a break for teachers 😩 but students were able to have a long weekend...is it summer yet? I have my pile of books that I like to read throughout each month and Pies from Nowhere: How Georgia Gilmore Sustained the Montgomery Bus Boycott is always at the top. I just love a story that talks about real people doing small things to make a big change. Georgia Gilmore literally cooked food to help raise funds for...
